Dalle de Verre Glass Restoration in Denver

Denver Stained Glass is proud to offer restoration services for Dalle de Verre glass in Denver and the surrounding area. If you believe that your Dalle glass needs repairs and is showing signs of deterioration like cracking, crumbling, or loose pieces, we invite you to contact us for a consultation.

Dalle de Verre is a French term that means “slab of glass” and is a technique used by stained glass artisans to create colorful abstract compositions that are inserted into windows. Colored glass is cut into shapes using a saw, then chiseled around the edges using a hammer to create crescent-like shapes and produce a faceted aesthetic. Then, the pieces are laid out on a flat bed of sand in an artistic pattern. Epoxy is poured over the glass to hold it in shape, then more sand is added to fill in the spaces between the pieces of glass.

This form of glassmaking was very popular in the U.S. in the 1960’s and 1970’s. As such, many Dalle glass windows in our country are about 50 to 60 years old and are now reaching an age where they are in need of repair. We are one of the very few studios qualified to perform Dalle glass restoration here in Denver.

Restoration Process for Dalle Glass

Our process for restoring Dalle Glass differs slightly than our normal restoration process. This is because Dalle Glass is made using different techniques, so we adjust our process accordingly. First, we conduct an onsite assessment to determine the condition of the glass and determine possible avenues for repair.

Once we receive your approval, we begin the restoration process by removing one or two sections at a time. To preserve the aesthetic of the stained glass, we can print a replica of the design on vinyl and attach it to a piece of clear glass, which can be inserted in place of the section being repaired. When we do this, it’s nearly impossible to tell that any part is missing.

We conduct the repairs by carefully taking apart the glass and removing any remaining epoxy from the edges. Any glass that is badly broken is replaced using an exact match. Then, we reassemble the entire panel using the same process in which it was produced with epoxy and sand. Before it is reinstalled, we make sure that it’s perfectly clean and looking its best.

Though this process is time-consuming and labor-intensive, the results are worth it. Your Dalle glass will look even more beautiful than it did before, and you won’t have to worry about loose pieces posing a safety hazard or the damage progressing further. Now, it can enjoyed for another 50 to 60 years time or more!
